Jeff Barlow has been part of Seattle’s design community for the past 20 years. Currently Creative Manager for In-Store Experience at Starbucks, Jeff began his design career at Team Design/Methodologie with Janet De Donato (2010 AIGA Seattle Fellow) in the mid-1990s. He later started Grip Design with fellow designer Tan Le (2009 AIGA Seattle Fellow), and acted as Principal and Creative Director when it merged with POP! in 2002. Jeff began his own studio, Jelvetica, in 2007 and continues to serve as its principal designer and Creative Director.
Not just a busy designer, Jeff is also a devoted and industrious emissary of the profession. Crazy about typography, he regularly teaches at the School of Visual Concepts and developed an immersive full-day workshop called Typography Boot Camp. He lectures about rock and roll typography around the country, and helped to successfully integrate the Society of Typographic Aficionados (SoTA) with TypeCon Seattle.
An active member of AIGA Seattle, Jeff served as AIGA Seattle President from 2008-2010. During his tenure he launched Because of AIGA, a website that collects stories from designers across the country who have benefitted from their experience with AIGA. He also helped start AIGA’s first Alaskan Chapter in Anchorage. Finally, Jeff continues to play a significant programming/producing role for Into the Woods, AIGA Seattle’s biennial design retreat.
